Acne Vulgaris Pictures

Nearly 100% of people will have a break out of acne at sometime in their life.  This is an inflammatory skin condition that is commonly known as pimples, zits, or any number of slang terms.  Twenty percent may have it severely enough to cause scarring.  The breakouts are most common on the oiliest part of the skin, most commonly the face, upper chest, and back.

The trigger most identified with acne is puberty.  The hormonal changes in both males and females are associated with breakouts.  The hormone androgen is higher during that time, and it stimulates the production of sebum.  Sebum is a fatty acid that makes our skin and hair oily.  The sebum is produced and excreted by sebaceous glands around a hair follicle.  The oil and dead skin cells collect and clog the hair follicles, or pores, causing a pimple.

Genetics are known to play a large part in how severely you may be impacted by acne.  If either of your parents had severe acne, you will be more likely to suffer the same fate.  The other triggers for breakouts are poor insulin regulation, monthly hormone fluctuations, poor hygiene, and oil producing foods.  Menopause, occlusive cosmetics, humidity, sweating, and some clothing are other triggers.

A pimple is a papule or pustule that is red, 2 to 5 mm in diameter.  They usually start out as a black head or white head.  When the cells in the sebaceous glands rupture, it causes the inflammation that changes the black head or white head into a papule or pustule.  A papule is a deeper inflammation, and a pustule is a more superficial inflammation.  You are considered to have a mild case of acne if you have less than 30 pimples.  30 to 125 pimples mean you have moderate acne.  Anything over 125 is considered severe.

There are many drugs used in the treatment of acne.  The best one for you would be prescribed by your dermatologist to address your symptoms, since there are also a number of different types of acne.  Washing your face twice a day during periods you are suffering from hormonal changes will help to keep breakouts to a minimum.  Keeping your face, chest, or back clean on a daily basis is important at all times to keep breakouts at bay.  Products that have hydroxyl acid or salicylic acid will help quite a bit.

Severe acne vulgaris can result in scarring of the skin.  Both the scarring and the severe acne can result in psychosocial issues, especially for adolescents.  Puberty is a time when there are significant changes in the development of a child.  Acne can cause shame and embarrassment, because so much emphasis is put on physical appearance.  Social phobia, clinical depression, and anxiety have been associated with acne vulgaris.  So while acne may leave no scars on the skin surface, it sometimes leaves scars on the inside.
